Wem Roots and Thomas Adams School present another unforgettable night at the Stanier Hall, Wem. “The Poozies” will be performing on Friday 30th November from 8pm. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets (£10 adult, £8 for students) are available now. To book please call 01939 234609.

From KAREN TWEED’s mercurial accordion playing, through the delicate strength of EILIDH SHAW’s fiddling, interweaved by the percussive passion of SALLY BARKER’s guitar and voice; to the earthy traditional Scottish songs and tunes of PATSY SEDDON and MARY MACMASTER, THE POOZIES blend their musical and life experiences, producing an unusual and vibrant style of music that has no boundaries.

Having welcomed original co founder and raucous vocalist Sally Barker back into the fold last year, their Scottish fiddler, Eilidh Shaw, returns to add her Gaelic charm and delightful harmonies to the newly expanded band.

Accordionist Karen Tweed and harp players Patsy Seddon and Mary Macmaster, who have been busy working on a variety of musical side projects, are now re-united, reinvigorated, and ready to entrance the nation with their sophisticated harmonies, marvellous musicianship, and varied repertoire.

From traditional Gaelic tunes, to self composed masterpieces, quintessential English pop, and Southern country songs, the depth and range of styles that they encompass knows no boundaries.

Similarly, Sally’s rhythmic guitar work and wide ranging vocals can take you on a journey from the deep Delta swamps to choral heaven, and she is beautifully backed by the Angelic delights of the respected and revered 4 part Poozie harmonies.

Equalling their musical dexterity and breadth sees them drawing inspiration from different countries and continents: coaxing and cajoling everything from the sweetest of sounds to the deepest rumbling bass out of their instruments to ever run up your spine.

From the British Isles and Ireland to Scandinavia, France and beyond, Karen’s accordion playing and Eilidh’s fiddle work will enchant and delight as they move from a slow and haunting air to a fast and furious jig with ease.

…. And then there are the harps. One minute they can transport you to a blissful and harmonious world only to be brought back to earth by the most growling and resonant of bass lines this side of Charlie Mingus in full flow. However, if you search beyond their relaxed stage demeanour, elegant attire, magnificent musicianship and heavenly harmonies you will find something just as special: simple camaraderie. Time spent apart brings them closer together, strengthening their bond and leading to the creation of better and better music as time goes by.

Seventeen years in, a 20th anniversary looming and The Poozies are still a musical and personal whirlwind while retaining that grace and charm that we have come to know and love.
In a world wrapped in grey, The Poozies are a giant splash of colour, and a very pretty picture they are too.

Taiko Rangers go off on a Tangent..

tangent250.gif

The Inaugural meeting of the Association of Tangent Clubs took place at the Hinton Firs Hotel, Bournemouth, in 1965. It was agreed there that the time had not yet arrived to form a National Association, but that there would be a meeting each year. The main object of the Association should be to continue the friendships made in Ladies’ Circle and to help Circle when required to do so. In 1967 a Chairman was elected to serve for a whole year. A Jewel was presented and the Chairman had the honour to represent Tangent at the Ladies’ Circle Annual General Meeting in 1968 for the first time. The National Association of Tangent Clubs was formed in 1970. The Chairman became the President, a Vice-President was elected and, with the Immediate Past President, Hon. Secretary, Hon. Treasurer and Sales and Regalia Officer, form the National Executive. The National Association retained the minimum of rules with Clubs making their own ruling regarding the election of their own officers and times of their meetings.

Wem Tangent is a group for ladies over the age of 40 who were previously members of Ladies’ Circle. They have almost 30 members and meet once a month to do whatever takes their fancy, chosen by the members who are organising that particular meeting. Over the last 12 months they have had walks, a treasure hunt, dinner meetings with guest speakers and even a flower arranging evening with the florist who arranged the flowers for the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. They aim to have friendship and fun with many of them having been friends for over 40 years.

On Tuesday 16th October the Taiko Rangers will be hosting an evening with the ladies of Wem Tangent at Edstaston Village Hall. The Taiko Rangers will be performing and then leading the members in a workshop leading to a performance at the end of the evening. It promises to be an unforgettable evening!

“If You Can Walk You Can Dance” Motherland Workshop, Saturday 15th July 2007

On Saturday 15th September, prior to the evening performance, four of the performers did a workshop with 30 people. The workshop participants were drawn from the school and from the wider community. It was the first time we have had a “community workshop” as part of the Wem Roots series of events. The following video is the first of a series I will post. The first part of the workshop focused on dance and was led by Gerrard Martin and Amayra Fuller. Gerrard has performed in The Lion King on the West End. He has toured with the Phoenix Dance Company and performed with English National Opera, The Royal Opera and many commercial artists including Lionel Richie, Jamelia, Eternal, Shola Ama and Shaggy. Amayra trained in contemporary dance with the Northern School of Contemporary Dance. They were assisted in the dance workshop by two musicians (more about them in the next post).
